Euromillions Prizes

Unraveling the 13 Prize Categories

Euromillions offers 13 different prize categories, ranging from matching just two main numbers to hitting the jackpot by matching all five main numbers and both Lucky Star numbers. This range of prizes means that even if you don’t win the jackpot, there are many other opportunities to win smaller but still substantial prizes.

Euromillions prizes are established on a draw-by-draw basis according to two variables: sales revenue and accumulated prizes. Euromillions prizes are accumulative, which means that if there are no hits in a certain category, the prize is accumulated and added to the next draw’s proceeds, which allows Euromillions jackpots to grow to multi-million figures. The following table shows the distributions of the prize fund according to each category, as well as the number of hits needed to win each prize:

Chasing the Elusive Jackpot

The Euromillions jackpot is the ultimate prize that players dream of winning. The jackpot starts at a minimum of 17 million euros (approximately 14 million pounds) and can grow up to a staggering 250 million euros (approximately 217 million pounds).

The new Euromillions rules, introduced in February 2020, updated the jackpot cap from €190 million to €200 million, with the novelty that, once that figure was reached, the limit would increase by a further €10 million to €210 million, and so on until the maximum cap of €250 million was reached. So far, the biggest jackpot ever won on Euromillions was €230 million (£195 million) in July 2022, so the current jackpot cap is €240 million.

What Happens When the Euromillions Cap is Reached?

The Euromillions jackpot can be accumulated, but only up to a certain limit. But what happens when this cap is reached, and what if there is no winner of the draw? This is when one of the most interesting Euromillions rules comes into play: the “Must be Won” draw.

The dynamics of the Must be Won draw, establishes that, once the Euromillions cap is reached, if there are no winners of the first prize, the jackpot will remain static for the next draw, and so on until a total of 4 draws without winners after the limit is reached. The proceeds from sales for subsequent draws would be accumulated in the lower prize categories instead of the jackpot, further swelling the prize figures in other categories. But if, after the 4th draw, there is no winner either, the Euromillions rules state that the jackpot will be distributed in the 5th draw. How does this happen? Because, in case there is no winner, the jackpot will be distributed among the winners of the next category with correct numbers. This ensures that even if the jackpot isn’t won, the massive prize pool doesn’t go to waste.

How to Play EuroMillions

The Basics

EuroMillions is slightly similar to how other lottery games function – but they put their own spin on the formula. The gist is this: You select five numbers from 1 to 50, plus two additional numbers – also known as Lucky Stars – from 1 to 12. For players to win the jackpot, all five main numbers and both Lucky Stars have to match the combination drawn. The standard pricing for one EuroMillions ticket costs €2.50, but it may be a bit higher in some online outlets due to additional fees imposed by some lottery sites.

The Super Draw

The EuroMillions Super Draw offers a guaranteed minimum prize of €130 million!

The EuroMillions Super Draws are special events held every now and then that ensures a big payout to winners. These draws function pretty much the same as any regular EuroMillions draw, with one difference: jackpots are set to a guaranteed amount of at least €130 million. Should no one win the jackpot, it will simply roll over to the succeeding draw, and the next, and so on until it reaches the €190 million jackpot cap. The jackpot can remain at the aforementioned cap for a total of four drawings.

If no one still wins the jackpot, then the prize money will be distributed among winners of the 2nd prize tier. This is what is called an Event Draw. So far, however, there has never been a EuroMillions Event Draw.

The Odds of Winning

If you were thinking that it would be impossible to match all 5 numbers, plus 2 Lucky Stars, you’d be surprised to know that you actually have much better odds of winning a EuroMillions jackpot than, say, a Powerball one. Compared to the latter’s 1 in 292,201,338.00 odds, EuroMillions’ odds look much, much better. The overall odds for winning any prize, for instance, are 1 in 13 – pretty impressive, if you ask me. Take a gander at the table below to see what I mean:

New EuroMillions rules 2020

In February 2020, the rules of the Euromillions lottery have been modified and validated by all the different European operators. If these rules do not change the odds of the Euromillions lottery, on the other hand, they modify the way in which the prizes are allocated and distributed.

The earnings of the middle ranks are lowered with the new Euromillions rules of 2020. The share of stakes distributed to the ranks 2 at 13 has been revised downwards for all ranks.

The share of bets in increasing the jackpot (rank n ° 1) has been strengthened, allowing prize pools to grow faster than before.

The EuroMillions jackpot cap has been revised upwards for the first time since 2004. The maximum amount of the EuroMillions European lottery is set at 200 millions of euros. Once reached, it can be put into play 5 once in a row and in a subsequent series, the maximum ceiling will be extended by 10 millions of euros, up to the maximum 250 millions of euros (10 million euros in 10 millions of euros).

The Biggest EuroMillions Jackpots of All Time

Since EuroMillions began, there have been more than 500 jackpot winners. Each of the lucky winners have successfully managed to beat the odds, while some went on to claim a record win at the time of the draws. The majority of winners opt to remain anonymous, with few details released by the lottery operators in the winning countries unless the winners specifically choose the publicity option.

In most cases, the record jackpots have been the capped amount at that time, for example 190, 200, 210, 220, 230 and 240 million Euros. The only exception in this list is the €187 million jackpot won in 2013, where it fell just €3 million short of the maximum amount it could have reached at the time.

The list of the 10 biggest EuroMillions jackpots ever won is displayed below:

Why Prizes Differ Between Currencies

The Euro is the base currency for EuroMillions as it is used by seven of the nine participating countries. When a jackpot is won in the UK the equivalent figure in pounds is paid out, based on the exchange rate on the day of the draw.

For non-jackpot prizes, the amount you receive in the UK is not worked out purely on the basis of the exchange rate. Instead, a formula is in place to take into account each country’s contribution to the game.

Each country that participates in EuroMillions contributes €1.10 into the Common Prize Fund, which is used to pay out prizes to all winners. Camelot’s contribution to the Common Prize Fund is the 50% of £1.74 from every EuroMillions ticket sold.

If, using the exchange rates on the day of a draw, Camelot’s contribution to the Common Prize Fund works out at less than €1.10, prizes paid out to UK players will be reduced to compensate for the shortfall. If, on the other hand, Camelot’s contribution amounts to more than €1.10, UK winners will receive comparatively bigger prizes than winners in other countries.

To put it simply, if £1.74 is worth less than €2.20, UK winners will receive smaller prizes than those in other countries. If £1.74 is worth more than €2.20, UK players will receive more. These rules ensure that prizes are always in line with how much each participating country contributes to the Common Prize Fund.
